Five things Budget 2017 did for the motorist

The main speeches have been given, the briefcase has been pictured and we’re trying to figure out what it means for us.

If you’re a motorist, no fear, here are the five things it means for you:
1. Push to go electric

VRT relief (€5,000) on electric vehicles is extended for five years. Buyers benefit from a total of €10,000 off the price of an electric car because the SEAI (Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland) also contributes a €5,000 grant.
2. All about the hybrid

VRT relief (worth up to €1,500) is extended for two years on hybrids.
3. Thinking green

Plug-in hybrids will get €2,500 VRT relief for two more years at least. And there is an additional €5,000 SEAI grant – making a total of up to €7,500 off the price of a plug-in.
4. No increases on petrol

Mr Noonan did not increase tax on petrol or diesel.
5. Natural gas

Natural gas used as vehicle fuel will be taxed at minimum excise rate – for eight years.
