Brexit may not mean Brexit for the North – McGuinness

Northern Ireland may still remain within the European Union despite Britain voting to leave, deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness has said.

The North voted to remain within the bloc in the June referendum and Mr McGuinness said leaving the Union presents “massive challenges” for the island of Ireland.
“The British government need to understand there is a strong feeling across Ireland that our future remains in Europe,” he told Newstalk Breakfast.

Mr McGuinness was speaking ahead of the All-Ireland Brexit forum, which is due to take place at the Royal Hospital in Kilmainham today.
Controversially the North’s First Minister Arlen foster refused an invitation to the meeting that is being hosted by Taoiseach Enda Kenny.

Mr McGuinness said it was “absolutely vital” for both Governments to work together in order to minimise the negative effects of the Brexit vote.
The Sinn Féin politician also said he “did not accept” that the Irish Government would have no problem in relocating jobs from the North down to the South.
