Number of people signing on dole falls again in April

The number of people signing on the Live Register fell by 4,400 in April as the country’s unemployment rate dipped to 8.4pc in the month, new figures have shown.

According to the Central Statistics Office (CSO) there were 305,785 people signing on the live register last month, which is down 11pc on the same period on 2015.

The rate of unemployment amongst males fell by 1.4pc as 2,600 men dropped off the register.

Similarly unemployment in females also fell by 1.4pc in April, which represents a drop off of 1,800 women during the month.

The number of male claimants in the year has fallen by 12.9pc to 181,512 while the number of female claimants fell by 8.1pc to 124,273.

The drop in overall unemployment in April has brought the rate down to its lowest since November 2008, when the rate stood at 8.1pc. The number of those unemployed under 25 fell by 19.4pc in the month.
