Aldi’s Ballincollig store has become the first Aldi store in Ireland to donate 25,000 meals to local charities through the grocery store’s partnership with FoodCloud.
FoodCloud’s innovative software platform allows stores to connect with local charities to ensure surplus food from grocery stores can be rescued.
Since the partnership between Aldi and FoodCloud started in 2014, Aldi in Ballincollig has provided almost 11,000 kilograms of surplus food, equating to a saving of €35,000 for the charities and community groups involved.
Charities which the Ballincollig store supports include Cuan Mhuire Farnanes, Ballincollig Family Resource Centre, and O’Connell Court.
Commenting on the news, Ciara Hosford, Aldi’s Ballincollig store charity champion said, that they were “delighted” with the milestone.
“No one likes to see our surplus food go to waste and knowing this is going to and helping the local charities that do so much great work throughout Cork is something that we are hugely proud to be involved in,” Ms Hosford said.
FoodCloud CEO Iseult Ward described it as “amazing” to see how the store had made such a difference to its local community in a short space of time.
While Sally Burke, from the local charity Cuan Mhuire Farnanes said that the donations have given the charity the capacity to provide more meals to those who need help most and also allowed the charity to use its budget for other essentials and help more and more people.
